US Secretary of State says the alliance serves American interests, but each member must “carry their weight”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a good alliance, but every member must invest adequately in defense. This was reported by WNTab on Thursday, April 24, citing Rubio’s interview with The Free Press.
Marco Rubio:
«NATO is great—as long as it remains a defensive alliance, not a union of the U.S. and a bunch of junior partners who don’t pay their fair share».
He recalled that for the past 25 years, nearly every U.S. president has complained that NATO partners are not doing enough. According to Rubio, when countries allocate only 1% of their GDP to defense, it is no longer a partnership but a dependency.
The Secretary of State also criticized some NATO countries for failing to invest in their own defense for nearly three decades.
At the same time, Rubio praised Poland as a country doing more than expected. According to NATO’s own data, Warsaw currently allocates 4.12% of its GDP to defense and plans to increase military spending by 10% starting in 2025.
Earlier, WNTab reported that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a major reorganization of his department.
