The farewell ceremony for the late Pope Francis has begun at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. This was reported by WNTab on Wednesday, April 23.

The farewell events will continue for three days. Thousands of faithful have already gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pay their respects to the deceased head of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis will be the first pontiff in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican. According to his will, the burial will take place at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The Pope also requested that his funeral be held without the usual pomp and ceremony.

The burial is scheduled for April 26.
