Parliamentary Elections in France: Results of the Second Round of Voting Released

The left-wing coalition “New People’s Front” wins

In France, the second round of elections to the National Assembly has concluded, resulting in no political force gaining enough votes to form a parliamentary majority. This was reported by WNTab on Monday, July 8, citing data from Le Monde.

According to the results of the second round, the left-wing coalition “New People’s Front” will have the most seats in parliament – 182 mandates. In second place is Emmanuel Macron’s centrist coalition “Together for the Republic” with 168 deputies. The first round winner, Marine Le Pen’s right-wing party “National Rally,” took third place with 143 mandates in parliament.

In total, the National Assembly has 577 seats. Thus, no political force gained enough seats to form a parliamentary majority.

Left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon has already stated that he will not form a coalition with Macron’s centrist forces, and has also called on the president to allow the left to form the government.

Emmanuel Macron dissolved the National Assembly after the “National Rally” party won the European Parliament elections. Marine Le Pen’s political force also won the first round of the parliamentary elections. However, the left and centrists resorted to a slight electoral maneuver in the second stage. Specifically, opponents withdrew their less successful candidates in some districts so that one of the most popular candidates would run against the right-wing representative. Thus, they managed to prevent the right-wing forces from winning the parliamentary elections.

Notably, after the election results were announced, mass protests erupted in many French cities, often escalating into clashes with the police. For instance, around 8,000 protesters gathered at Place de la République in Paris, setting fire to garbage bins and bicycles and throwing bottles and flares at the police. In response, law enforcement used tear gas.

Protests also took place in Bordeaux, Marseille, Lille, Nantes, and Rennes.

Earlier, WNTab reported that Keir Starmer became the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following early parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, in the United States, there is discussion about possibly replacing Joe Biden with Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate.

These talks began after the current White House chief did not perform well in a televised debate with Donald Trump.
