Indo-Pakistani conflict escalates into full-scale war
Pakistan has accused India of attacking several of its military facilities. New Delhi responded by saying that the army’s actions were in retaliation for drone strikes and shelling in 26 border regions, recorded on the evening of May 9.
In response, Islamabad launched Operation “Bunyān al-Marsūs,” targeting several sites including the Indian capital New Delhi, a hypersonic missile depot in Punjab, and multiple military bases. Media reports also spoke of a massive cyberattack on India’s power grid, which allegedly disabled 70% of its capacity.
Later, reports emerged of phone talks between the military leadership of both countries. A few hours later, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that both sides had agreed to a ceasefire following prolonged negotiations involving the U.S. However, the calm was short-lived.
Just four hours later, the Kashmiri authorities reported a drone attack from Pakistan. Islamabad, in turn, accused Indian border forces of shelling along the Line of Control in Kashmir.
European leaders visit Ukraine
On May 10, a delegation of leaders from the so-called “coalition of the willing” arrived in Kyiv. Among them were UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish President Donald Tusk.
The politicians held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and also spoke via phone with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Following the meeting, the Ukrainian leader proposed a 30-day truce in the war with Russia. Starmer and Macron stated that if Moscow violates the ceasefire, large-scale sanctions will again be imposed on Russia and military aid to Kyiv will be increased.
U.S. preparing free association agreement with Greenland
Reuters, citing its sources, reported on the U.S. initiative. Washington promises assistance to the island in a wide range of areas—from mail delivery to military defense. In return, the U.S. military would be granted full operational freedom in Greenland.
Similar agreements already exist between Washington and several Pacific island nations—Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands.
Mexico sues Google
The lawsuit stems from the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the “American Gulf” in Google search results for U.S. users.
150,000 in Spain urged to stay indoors
The Catalan government issued the warning following a fire at a chlorine storage facility near Barcelona. The blaze created a toxic cloud, and residents were advised to close all windows and doors.
Patient riot erupts in German psychiatric hospital
Journalists report that one patient, under the influence of alcohol, barricaded himself inside a room. Other patients later joined him, building barricades and setting furniture on fire. A fire broke out in the facility.
Some staff members managed to escape. The building is now surrounded by special forces, armored vehicles, and helicopters.
Authorities are investigating how alcohol entered the psychiatric facility.
Soviet satellite Kosmos-482 crashes into Indian Ocean
Launched in March 1972 to study Venus, the satellite failed to reach its intended orbit due to technical issues and remained in Earth’s orbit. The fall of Kosmos-482 into the ocean was managed by an automated system.

The tragedy occurred near Lake Tanganyika. On the night of May 10, a heavy downpour hit the region, and residents were unable to escape in time when the Kasaba River suddenly overflowed.
Putin proposes resuming direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul
Late on the night of May 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a press statement proposing the resumption of direct peace talks with Ukraine, which had been suspended in spring 2022. Moscow expressed readiness for negotiations without any preconditions. The Russian president also suggested a date and location for the first meeting—May 15 in Istanbul, Turkey.
