The NATO Council has elected Mark Rutte as the Secretary General of the Alliance

The politician will assume his new duties on October 1st

The NATO Council has chosen the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, as the new Secretary General, according to the Alliance’s press service as reported by WNTab on Wednesday, June 26th.

It is reported that the Dutch politician will begin his new responsibilities on October 1st, 2024, when the term of the current head of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, ends. Stoltenberg has led the organization for 10 years.

The election of NATO’s new Secretary General became a formality after last week when Romanian President Klaus Iohannis withdrew his candidacy. Rutte’s opponent failed to garner enough support among Alliance members and decided not to participate in the elections.

Earlier, WNTab reported that Australian internet journalist Julian Assange is being released from prison and heading home.
