In the Valencia region, a year’s worth of rainfall fell in a single day
A massive flood triggered by abnormal downpours has claimed the lives of 72 people in Spain, according to WNTab, citing Reuters on Wednesday, October 30.
Reports indicate that the Valencia region and surrounding areas received an entire year’s worth of rainfall—200 mm—in just 24 hours. The storm destroyed bridges and buildings and overturned dozens of vehicles. In some places, water levels reached up to two meters, forcing people to seek safety on the roofs of vehicles and surviving buildings.
Additionally, the floodwaters inundated farmland in the region, which produces two-thirds of the country’s citrus crops. Notably, Spain is one of the world’s leading exporters of these fruits.
Army units joined rescue teams to help address the flood’s aftermath and assist affected residents.
