UN: Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s population has decreased by 10 million people

The main reasons for the population decline are the departure of refugees, a drop in birth rates, and war-related deaths

Florence Bauer, Head of the United Nations Population Fund for Eastern Europe, stated that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s population has decreased by 10 million people. This was reported by WNTab on Wednesday, October 23, citing Bauer’s remarks during a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Bauer added that the military conflict has turned an already challenging demographic situation in the country into a more serious one.

According to her, an accurate assessment of the population decline will have to wait until the end of the hostilities, when a census can be conducted. However, it is already clear that the largest portion of the decline is due to refugees. According to Bauer, 6.7 million people have left Ukraine and are living abroad, mainly in Europe.

Currently, the UN has been unable to precisely estimate the death toll from the fighting but stated that the number is in the tens of thousands.

Earlier, WNTab reported that over 100 people were killed in an explosion at the site of a tanker truck accident in Nigeria.
